WHAT SESSIONS ARE LIKE
For a lot of teens, the idea of sitting opposite an adult and talking about feelings for 50 minutes sounds pretty unappealing. Therapy can be much more flexible than that.
Sessions can be conversational, visual, practical or activity-based depending on what works best. The focus is on understanding what is happening, trying strategies and building skills that can actually be used outside the room.
The goal.
Not to make a young person dependent on therapy, but to help them understand themselves, build skills and feel increasingly able to handle life with confidence and independence.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR FIRST SESSION
getting to know you.
Early sessions focus on getting to know you, helping you feel comfortable, understanding what has been challenging and what you would like support with. Together, we discuss your goals and develop a plan that feels right for you.
There is no pressure to open up straight away. Sessions are flexible and tailored to your interests and preferences. They might include creative activities, games, or simply talking about the things that matter to you.
PARENTS + CONFIDENTIALITY
same team, clear boundaries.
Parents and carers can be an important part of therapy, particularly for tweens and younger teens or when support at home will help. As young people get older, they also need enough privacy to build a genuine therapeutic relationship and practise age-appropriate autonomy.
How parent involvement works is discussed at the beginning so everyone understands what will be shared, what stays private, and when safety concerns would need to be communicated.
